Life is life, and then you die: The NYTimes culled its obituaries to highlight “artists we lost in 2019”—their catalog (37) of the famous who qualify as artists of note.

“Dear, if your passing wasn’t noticed, we didn’t lose you.”

Yet, were they not largely forgotten until the turn of the year becomes such an occasion for the “Best of X”?

“Let there be good death among the exemplars, then let’s move on.”
