In a search today of articles via ingentaconnect and SpringerLink, I was interested in (“biased” in favor of) English articles which seem to importantly apply Habermas’ work in novel contexts or ways; or articles which seem to critically challenge the Habermasian scholar (in any case: articles which provide an abstract).
The following, regrettably-short list (results for 2006present) doesn’t include articles merely seeking to increase deserved attention to Habermas’ work in some applied context, nor work which applies his work supplementally.
• On the educational creation of meaning through deliberative communication: Deliberative communication: a pragmatist proposal.
• Toward a discourse of care in teaching for citizenship: Habermas, lifelong learning and citizenship education.
• On developing mental capacities for deliberative citizenship: Responsibility and the Deliberative Citizen: Theorizing the Acceptance of Individual and Citizenship Responsibilities.
• Barbara Fultner shows how Brandom’s inferentialism provides a semantics that complements Habermas’ theory of communicative action: Inferentialism and Communicative Action: Robust Conceptions of Intersubjectivity.
• On the mental health contribution that Habermas’ discourse ethics might make to gaining autonomy: The Recovery Model: Discourse Ethics and the Retrieval of the Self.
• Cass Sunstein analyzes shortcomings of the blogosphere (presumably beyond his Infotopia): Neither Hayek nor Habermas.
• An issue of Communication Theory: Symposium: Habermas and Deliberative Democracy.
• On Bryan G. Norton's Habermasian experimentalism: Pragmatic Paths to Environmental Sustainability. See also a Habermas group posting on Norton's book.
• An issue of Constellations on Habermas’ sense of constitutional patriotism: Habermas's Call for Cosmopolitan Constitutional Patriotism in an Age of Global Terror: A Pluralist Appraisal.
• On the transition from political violence to peace and reconciliation. Victims of Political Violence: A Habermasian Model of Truth Recovery.
Two applications of Habermasian discourse theory to business management theory:
• Integrity and Cynicism: Possibilities and Constraints of Moral Communication.
• Stakeholder Management Capability: A DiscourseTheoretical Approach.
That list continues an earlier exhibition of “recent” (up to 2004) applied Habermasian work by others. (I have a 2004-to-2006 list, but it’s a pile of print-outs I haven’t taken time to transpose into URLs. Contact me, if you’re interested.)
I expect to add to this page (I’ll post to the Habermas group when I do this), so the URL will remain. Discoveries by others which gel with my interest, indicated at the top, would be appreciated (and credited). Of course, there are lots of articles around that apply Habermas’ work. Here, I’m interested in apparently innovative work (and always look forward to having my horizon enriched by others).
