My notion of utropian town (university-centered municipality) gets scaled up in my prospecting relative to the evolving planetary lattice of metropoles that are oriented by a singular technologicality born from the singular scientific community that is leading intelligence. The master trope is a university town as ideal community on a planetary scale—not that I have Berkeley in mind overtly. Yet, I don’t know a better situation than living across the bay from San Francisco. The universCity of the S.F. Bay Area is actually a region of interlinked universities, research enterprises, and leading industries (immersed in typical metropolia) that seems as exemplary as there is. And municipal Berkeley government is a demophilic as one could want. So, my universCity is a demophilic idealization of a continuum between wholly flourishing life and ecologically flourishing humanity. GoodG politics culturally appropriates leading intelligence to social systems. Best practices originate from the intellectual virtue of specialized networks (e.g., evidence-based medicine) coalescing into consensus positions that inform progressive policy (e.g., healthy regioning). The university itself (as community) is conceivable as a singularity of ideal-typical inquiry, creativity, discourse, and teaching that globally originates real progresssity in terms (to my mind) of enabling wholly flourishing lives contributing aggregately to ecologically flourishing humanity.
